The British Beauty Council and Futures for All partnered with indu, one of the UK’s leading teen beauty brands, to deliver a two-day virtual work experience placement designed to inspire the next generation of beauty talent.
The placement gave students an exclusive behind-the-scenes insight into the inner workings of a modern beauty brand, providing valuable exposure to the diverse range of career opportunities available across the beauty industry.
The workshop began with an introduction to indu’s story, exploring the inspiration behind the brand and its mission to create skincare and beauty products specifically designed for teenagers. Students learned about the importance of community at the heart of indu’s approach, discovered the science behind teen skin, and gained insight into the research, formulation and product development process behind the brand’s products. They also explored indu’s core values and brand pillars, gaining a deeper understanding of what makes the brand unique within today’s beauty landscape.
Students were introduced to indu’s marketing and communications strategy, learning how the brand connects with its audience through social media, community-led campaigns and real-world experiences. They explored how authentic storytelling, engaging content and meaningful connections help build a strong relationship with a teen audience.
Throughout the two days, students heard directly from experts across the business, including Sophie Bryant, Brand Marketing Director; Anya Shaw, Brand Communications Manager; and Gaia Carminati, Head of New Product Development, who shared insights into their roles, career journeys and experiences working within the beauty industry.
As part of the placement, students took part in a live brand challenge set by indu, allowing them to apply their learnings to a real-world business scenario. Working collaboratively in groups, students were tasked with developing creative, low-cost ideas to help build awareness and excitement around indu among a teen audience, while also creating an idea to strengthen trust and credibility with parents.
The challenge encouraged students to think like a beauty brand team, considering how to generate conversation, engage communities and build brand awareness. On the final day, students presented their ideas back to the indu and British Beauty Council teams, showcasing their creativity, strategic thinking and understanding of the brand.
The placement provided students with a practical understanding of how different teams work together to bring a beauty brand to life, while highlighting the breadth of careers available across the sector – from marketing and communications to product development and brand strategy.
Programmes like these are a key part of the British Beauty Council’s commitment to inspiring the next generation of beauty talent and helping young people discover the wide range of opportunities available across the industry. Discover more of the work we’re doing to support the future of beauty.
