As an industry driven by competition, sustainable packaging innovation has historically been a series of closely guarded projects, steeped in secrecy but often doomed to fail once scale, accessibility and affordability are factored in.
However, in the last decade, a new reality has taken hold where ethics, economics, and law have converged to make environmental responsibility a non-negotiable focus for every brand.
Rather than continuing to face these challenges in silo, the British Beauty Council has acted as a conduit to facilitate the sharing of non-market sensitive information and the building of connections between beauty businesses in order to turn fragmented environmental efforts into a unified movement. And so the Packaging Solutions Summit was born.
Previously known as the Plastic Solutions Summit, the British Beauty Council, together with partners including Plastic Free and Made Thought, created the Packaging Solutions Summit in 2021, a high-level event where the architects of the future gather to redesign the industry from the bottle up.
The Summit’s true legacy isn’t just found in the keynote speeches and group discussion, but in the introductions and conversations that happen between them. Over the last five years, PSS has acted as a vital matchmaker, bridging the gap between cutting-edge packaging innovators and the world’s most iconic beauty brands.
By bringing together CEOs, Directors, and Founders of major beauty and personal care companies, Heads of Sustainability and ESG, Packaging Manufacturers and Material Innovators, retail leaders and Supply Chain Managers, Government representatives and policy experts, the Summit has fostered a unique ecosystem where:
The urgency for change is driven by a mix of environmental necessity and the hard facts of modern business as identified in the Council’s original sustainability report Courage to Change:
As we approach the five years since the inaugural Plastic Solutions Summit, the mission to transition to circular and sustainable packaging has never felt more urgent. The beauty industry is navigating a regulatory tsunami of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). In this new landscape, circular design is no longer just an ethical choice, but a financial imperative.
2026 will see sustainability weaved throughout the Council’s annual British Beauty Week programming. Showcasing innovation and solutions, and ensuring valuable conversations and connections, activations and sessions during British Beauty Week will help in the push to build a more thoughtful and sustainable future in beauty, together.
