The Power of Scent: Celebrating National Fragrance Week 2026, By Emma Fishwick – Circana

by | Mar 19, 2026

My mum has worn Versace Dylan Turquoise for years, and she gets stopped constantly by people asking what she’s wearing. At her local coffee shop, she’s known as “the amazing smelling lady,” which she finds equal parts hilarious and flattering. It’s a perfect reminder of how scent shapes perception — and how it quietly influences our mood. The UK prestige fragrance market reflects this lasting connection too, growing +2.7% in 2025 to reach £2.3B.

Why We Love Fragrance So Much

Fragrance is one of the strongest emotional cues we have. A single spritz can take us straight back to a memory, a moment, or a person we love. It’s also a form of self-expression — a subtle way to say who we are without saying a word. The right scent can energise, comfort, or boost our confidence. And across cultures and traditions, fragrance still plays a role in how we celebrate, connect, and remember.

A New Generation of Fragrance Fans

The fragrance landscape keeps evolving. Loyal long-time wearers are now joined by a new generation discovering scent in completely fresh ways. Lighter formats like body sprays, balms and mists have become easy entry points, encouraging experimentation. Brands are launching new scents represented by celebrities and creators who resonate with younger audiences, making fragrance feel modern and accessible. Whilst viral trends like “smellmaxing” have introduced even more consumers to the category, turning fragrance shopping into a social, fun experience shared among friends. As a result, Male Fragrances are growing at +2.9% YoY, outpacing Female Fragrances slightly, which are up +2.6% vs. last year.

What We Want From Fragrance Today

People are choosing fragrance with more intention than ever. Longevity has become a key priority, driving interest in stronger concentrations — with perfume formats growing +26% in 2025. Niche and artisanal scents outpace the Market as shoppers look for something that feels uniquely theirs.

Many consumers are now curating a “fragrance wardrobe,” switching scents depending on their mood, the moment, or the occasion. And with “fragrance layering” — mixing perfumes, lotions, oils, and mists — becoming a creative ritual, fragrance has evolved from a single bottle on a dressing table into a new form of self-expression.

The Final Spritz

As we celebrate National Fragrance Week 2026 from 16–22 March, it’s the perfect moment to appreciate how much fragrance adds to our everyday lives. I may be biased because I work in this industry, but I still think the greatest compliment you can give someone is the simplest: “You smell amazing.” Go on — Tell someone today. It might just make their day.
