“Clinically proven.” “Boosts collagen.” “Repairs and rejuvenates.” Skincare claims like these are everywhere. But what evidence actually sits behind them, and how does a brand get from a laboratory finding to a claim it can responsibly put on pack?
As part of British Beauty Week 2026, The Skin Diary presents The Evidence Lab: The Future of Skincare Science, a live panel discussion exploring how skincare claims are made, tested and communicated, from the biology happening inside living skin to the words consumers read on a bottle.
Chaired by beauty journalist and science communicator Claire Coleman, the panel brings together:
Across a conversational, fast-moving discussion, the panel unpacks what “clinically proven” actually means (and doesn’t), the different types of evidence used in skincare science, from mechanism studies to human biopsy research to consumer perception studies, and how findings travel from ingredient to finished product to marketing claim. The session closes with an audience Q&A and a Meet the Experts networking reception.
Guests can also step inside The Evidence Lab, a physical, interactive walkthrough that takes you from cell to surface: from the biopsy and microscopy work happening inside living skin, through to the instrumental testing and visible results measured at the surface. It’s the science from the panel discussion, made tangible.
Who should attend: anyone curious about the science behind skincare, whether you’re a dermatologist, scientist, journalist, beauty industry professional, or simply someone who wants to read a product label more critically.
