Skingredients Revamp Packaging with Refillable Solutions

by | Oct 25, 2021

The entire Skingredients product offering has been revamped to feature less packaging, more product and are easily refillable.

Globally, the beauty and skincare industry produces 142 billion units of packaging per year, with the majority of this being non-recyclable, single-use plastic. The British Beauty Council’s Courage to Change report found that consumers are increasingly concerned about the impact their beauty products are having – from cruelty to animals, to packaging, waste and recycling.

Skingredients announced their latest sustainablility efforts to reduce their impact on the planet to their community on Instagram, which has been greatly received, with comments including: “This is just excellent!” and another follower commenting “Just amazing. So so so proud of you“.

For those who may not have seen the announcement on social media, Skingredients have committed to choose more sustainable packaging solutions – their entire range of active-led, results-driven and clinically-proven skincare now uses refillable and fully recyclable inner tubes in a bid to reduce the waste that’s clogging landfills and our oceans. A study by the LCA Centre found that carbon emissions from the beauty and skincare industry could be cut down by 70% if refillable containers were used. Furthermore, with scientists warning that emissions need to be cut by 45% this decade in order to get a grip on global temperatures, through choosing refillable and recyclable packaging, Skingredients is taking steps in the right direction in their ongoing attempt to do their part in this global crusade.

So how does the new refillable packaging work?

Setting the standard for planet-conscious packaging, the whole Skingredients range has been revamped and is now produced with less packaging and contains more product, which is easily refillable. They are also introducing new, simple slot-in refillable tubes for every product in the range. The new innovative long-life tubes can be refilled time and time again, without jeopardising the efficacy and potency of the actives inside.

Packaging and materials used in Skingredients’ skincare range

Refillable inner tubes

Made from polypropylene (aka PP) and polyethylene (aka PE), both of which are widely recyclable plastics – so be sure to dispose of the inner tubes in a recycling bin once you’ve used every last drop of your product.

A tip from the brand: always wash and dry your Skingredients inner tubes before popping them in your recycling bin. Remember – by putting wet or damp packaging in your recycling bin, it compromises the entire contents!

Outer packaging + delivery boxes

While Skingredients would love to be able to cut their outer packaging altogether, it’s important that your primary packs get to you in one piece. That’s why their outer packaging is made from durable and fully recyclable cardboard, delivering your skincare in sustainable style.

Packing peanuts

Compostable + dissolvable packing peanuts that are locally sourced in Ireland, the home of Guinness, Sinéad O’Connor, and of course, Skingredients! Travelling fewer miles equals a smaller carbon footprint.

How long will Skingredients’ packaging last?

Skingredients primary packs are made from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), which are long-life, durable materials designed to last multiple uses. Your Skingredients primary packs will be your sink-side BFFs for years to come.

Because there’s no such thing as perfect

When it comes to sustainability there’s no such thing as perfect, and Skingredients knows the job is far from over. Because transparency is key, they’re committed to:

  • Exploring recycled and/or recyclable plastic for their primary packs within the next year.
  • Looking into ways they can facilitate recycling of the pumps used in their primary packs.
  • Sourcing a full recyclable pack for their Cleanse Off Mitt by March 2022.
  • Further offsetting their carbon footprint with a pledge to Plastics for Change.
