International Women’s Day 2019 : Balance For Better

by | Mar 8, 2019

The theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) this year is #BalanceForBetter, a CTA for a more gender-balanced world via collaboration.

Since yesterday there have been a series of events around the UK in support of International Women’s Day which will continue over the weekend.

If you’re in the area pay a visit to Brighton Women’s Centre Saturday 9th March to hear inspiring speakers like Juno Dawson and Tanya Byrne talk, see workshops (including one to help tackle period poverty) and a ‘body positivity’ photographic exhibition.

In London Body Shop is taking over Truman Brewery for a weekend of talks, workshops and yoga. Here at British Beauty Council HQ we’re celebrating women in work in particular – and especially those of us who work in beauty, many of whom have developed strong communities of support.

Beauty is enormously valuable to the UK economy (reportedly generating some £18bn a year) and its success could be said to be largely down to women, who make up the majority work force (said to be around a million in the UK alone) of the business.

As Sharmadean Reid MBE, CEO of Beautystack and British Beauty Council Advisor points out:

“the beauty industry allows women all over the country to have flexible, self-directed, creative careers, that empower them economically and provide financial independence. For too long those careers haven’t been taken seriously”.

Our aim is to get that proper recognition for beauty, and a representative voice where it matters, through our three foundation pillars – education, reputation and innovation.

Happy International Women’s Day friends!
