#EarthDay2022: what actions can individuals take?

by | Apr 21, 2022

Friday 22nd April marks Earth Day, a global campaign to diversify support for environmental protection.

On Instagram this week, the Sustainable Beauty Coalition has been exploring steps individuals can take towards a more sustainable future.

  1. Sustainable swaps:
    • The Planet Positive Beauty Guide offers some great advice on easy, sustainable swaps which everyone can make in their beauty and personal care routines. From choosing bamboo razors with swappable blades, to electing to buy a soap bar rather than shower gel, there are lots of small ways individuals can make a difference.
  1. Offsetting carbon:
    • Offsetting carbon is one of the ways to reduce our collective impact on the planet. One way to of doing this is through planting trees – a powerful act that can make a huge impact.
  1. Recycling more from the bathroom:
    • Packaging is one of the most significant challenges confronting the beauty industry, with the Planet Positive Beauty Guide stating that 95% of packaging thrown away. The energy required to manufacture new plastic from recycled material is only two-thirds that required to manufacture it from raw materials.
Ensuring there is a recycling bin in bathrooms could significantly help the planet.
  1. Reducing water consumption:
    • Individuals are taking steps to be more environmentally conscious when it comes to water consumption, with the Courage to Change report revealing that 57% of individuals are taking shorter showers. Reduce the length of your showers and turn off the tap when washing your face or brushing your teeth! By being more conscious about how you use water, we can all help to reduce our impact on the planet.
