‘The godmother of the nail industry’

Did you know that actress Tippi Hedren, who was discovered by Alfred Hitchcock after he saw her in a TV advert in 1961 (The Birds, Citizen Ruth, Marnie), was also known as ‘the godmother of the nail industry’?

Tippi trained Vietnamese refugee women to do manicures and placed them in salons across Southern California in the 1970’s!

At the start of the decade professional manicures and pedicures cost $50 (equivalent to $320 today), but towards the end of it new technology made these services, quicker, easier and cheaper for American women.

And this was the start of the nail bar culture as we know it.
