Planet Positive Beauty directory launches for hair and beauty professsionals

by | Oct 6, 2024

As part of its commitment to helping every area of industry clean up its act, the Sustainable Beauty Coalition has launched the Planet Positive Beauty directory for those in the service sector

The British Beauty Council’s Sustainable Beauty Coalition is proud to launch the Planet Positive Beauty directory for professional hair and beauty services. The online, easy-to-use portal is designed to help demystify sustainability-related jargon and in response to calls for help from beauty industry professionals who want to operate more sustainably.

With support from COTY – parent-company to leading cosmetics, fragrance, hair styling and colour brands – as well as cutting edge beauty certifiers Provenance and Positive Luxury the directory covers sustainable terms, simple solutions, and useful tools and resources.

The directory launches as brand-new research by the British Beauty Council indicates more than two thirds (65%) of beauty professionals are unaware of any organisations or initiatives that support waste reduction and sustainability in the professional beauty industry. This is a big challenge considering the industry generates 99,000 tonnes of waste* annually, most of which ends up in landfill.

Gathered with the support of the Professional Beauty Group, the research reflects the views of 1,500 beauty professionals in the UK. It found that almost all (95%) of those working in the industry think about the environmental impact of their work. In addition, a similar number (97%) think it is important for hair and beauty professionals to be actively involved in waste reduction efforts. Despite this, nearly two thirds (60%) have received little or no training in sustainability, but four fifths (81%) would be interested in doing so. A similar number (84%) are open to exploring new ways to make a positive impact in terms of reducing waste at their salon.

To help develop greater awareness and understanding of how to work more sustainably the British Beauty Council’s Sustainable Beauty Coalition has developed the Planet Positive Beauty directory specifically aimed at all hair and beauty professionals. The online portal helps professionals understand some of the key issues facing the service sector – including packaging, energy, and heating – and how best they can tackle them.

Millie Kendall OBE, CEO of the British Beauty Council: “The beauty industry in the UK is bigger than the UK’s creative, arts, and entertainment sector, so its imperative beauty professionals are suitably informed of how to work more sustainably. Our research shows that beauty professionals want to reduce their impact on the environment and many are taking the initiative to recycle and use refillable products, but there is a knowledge void when it comes to some of the many other ways they can work more sustainably. That’s where our new resource comes in, to inform and up skill hair and beauty professionals on practical changes they can make to reduce their waste and carbon emissions.”
