The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will be turning its attention to the practice of greenwashing.

What is Greenwashing?

Coined in the 1980s, Greenwashing is a term used to describe untenable corporate environmental claims. Cambridge Dictionary define Greenwashing: “behaviour or activities that make people believe that a company is doing more to protect the environment than it really is“.

Global Cosmetic News reports that the growing awareness of one’s own environmental impact, as well as the growth in consumer demand for planet-friendly options, has caused the CMA to begin taking action against Greenwashing.

“We know that many businesses will be looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and we strongly support this, but the claims they make must not mislead consumers in the process,” Andrea Coscelli, Chief Executive Officer of the CMA

The inquiry will include, among others, fashion, beauty and cleaning products.
