Make-up compacts are extremely difficult to recycle. Often, there are mixed materials glued together (such as mirrors and metal pans within plastic compacts), and various decoration techniques.

In addition, residual make-up within the packaging could be classed as a contaminant, resulting in further problems when trying to recycle efficiently.

Designing and manufacturing products can be very exciting, but considering sustainability and end-of-life should be at the forefront of the design process.

Whenever possible, make-up packaging should be made with minimal packaging, refillable and from innovative materials that are fully recyclable and/or home compostable.

Paper and aluminum packaging could also be a great solution, but be wary of invisible plastic barrier films and liners.

Retailers should consider offering a take back scheme to help consumers dispose of their difficult-to-recycle products.
