This weekend saw the 72nd Emmy Awards take place, but for the first time virtually.
The Emmy Award for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (non-prosthetic) 2020 was won by Euphoria (Doniella Davy, Kirsten Sage Coleman and Tara Lang Shah). Nominees for the award were: Big Little Lies, Euphoria, Ozark, Schitts Creek, Handmaids Tale, and The Politician.
When Euphoria first aired last year, people across the world became fascinated by the makeup looks and aesthetics created by the team. #EuphoriaMakeup on Instagram has almost 200,000 posts, countless YouTubers and Influencers have recreated the looks, and the influence at fashion week was clear with Pyer Moss, Jason Wu, and Chromat all presenting Euphora-inspired looks at NYFW the following season.
Speaking with Allure last year about the impact Euphoria continues to have, Head Makeup Artist Doniella Davy explained: “”It was the opposite approach from what typical makeup departments use for television, usually, so-and-so has their everyday look, and that’s just their look. This was completely different because Sam [Creator of Euphoria] wanted the makeup to be its own full expression of what was going on with the characters. If they’re experiencing different emotions and circumstances in all these scenes, then the makeup had to be different.””.
Following the Emmy win, Davy wrote on Instagram: “It’s hard to remember the last time a television programme had as big a cultural impact on beauty as the first season of Euphoria, the influence of which was immediately felt across the board from make-up fans on Instagram to the heavyweights at fashion week where rhinestone eyes and graphic liner was in full effect.”
Inspired by their win, we have curated a selection of makeup looks from the show by Doniella Davy, Kirsten Sage Coleman, and Tara Lang Shah.
As well as the award for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup, Zendaya (24) won Lead Actress in a Drama Series for the role she played as Rue in the HBO hit-show making her the youngest ever to win the accolade. Euphoria also won Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for Labrinth’s finale number “All For Us.”
