Since 2019, we’ve worked to shape the future of the British beauty industry. Explore some of the milestones we’re most proud of.
The Council supports the All Party Parliamentary Group for Beauty & Wellbeing to publish the first parliamentary report and recommendations on UV Safety.
The 2nd annual Great British Beauty Clean Up with over 55 brands taking part to promote sustainable practices and consumer behaviour. The British Beauty Council collaborated with MYGroup to launch a takeback scheme for hard-to-recycle items, such as used hair foils and makeup compacts.
First identifying the need for SIC code updates to segment the hair, beauty and spa sectors in 2018, followed by 8 years of lobbying by The British Beauty Council, the Government announced the recommended changes in the UK, with international changes made in 2025.
Gave evidence to the Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee on the science and regulation of hair and beauty products and treatments, highlighting the urgent need for regulation in aesthetics.
Secured the removal of the £135 de minimis tax exemption for overseas importers of low-value products to the UK, removing unfair competition.
The British Beauty Week schedule included an industry day showcasing The Future Of Beauty, a Founder’s Network reception, the 4th Packaging Solutions Summit, and MP visits to high streets nationwide to highlight the economic impact of the sector. To close, the Treasury welcomed leading representatives from across the UK’s beauty industry to No11 Downing Street for a reception, showcasing the trailblazing entrepreneurs, SMEs, and innovators defining the future of the beauty industry.
Gave oral evidence to the Business & Trade Select Committee Small Business Strategy Inquiry outlining the disproportionate effect UK Government Budget decisions have had on the cost of doing business for beauty SMEs.
Established the All Party Parliamentary Group for Beauty and Wellbeing to spotlight and raise the reputation of the beauty industry across Westminster.
The Sustainable Beauty Coalition launched The Great British Beauty Clean Up, the first campaign calling on the industry to unite to tackle beauty waste, with a focus on recycle, reuse, refill.
Future of Hairdressing report launched with 4 calls to action: Reform tax structures and clarify hybrid working, standardise qualifications to raise standards and protect consumers, strengthen business skills and apprenticeships, champion employment and self-employment as equal career paths.
The 3rd British Beauty Week started with a CEO Roundtable at No10 Downing Street. The schedule included a Plastic Solutions Summit, bringing together key innovators and business leaders to explore new alternatives and routes to scalability. A Trade and Export Breakfast with the Department for Business and Trade allowed businesses to network and gain insights into global trade. Rita Ora was appointed a Global Ambassador.
Launched an investment fund in partnership with Venrex, aimed at supporting exceptional and diverse beauty founders with a vision to shape the future of the industry.
Commissioned the 3rd edition, 'Value of Beauty' Report, uncovering the growth and ongoing resilience of the beauty sector.
The British Beauty Council launched 'A Beauty Industry That Looks Like You,' a census designed to reveal the true makeup of the UK's beauty sector. The largest survey of its kind, it gathered responses from thousands of workers and consumers to drive meaningful progress in diversity, equity and inclusion.
Victoria Brownlie represented the UK at the UN Commission on the Status of Women to spotlight opportunities for female entrepreneurs.
To mark the opening of British Beauty Week, Kate Moss is announced as Global Ambassador. Activities included a ‘Lessons at No10’ session with Soap & Glory to highlight the diverse careers available in the beauty industry.
At the 2nd Plastic Solutions Summit - the Sustainable Beauty Coalition published a four pillar plastic pledge as a blueprint for change and established task force groups with a remit to reduce waste across retail and professional services and educate consumers.
Launched Future Talent series of films at No.10 Downing Street with support from Department of Education and Secretary of State, Gillian Keegan.
Commissioned the 2nd edition, 'Value of Beauty' Report, highlighting the economics and structural changes post Covid & Brexit.
The Sustainable Beauty Coalition host the first Plastic Solutions Summit, to galvanise industry support and showcase alternatives for a plastic free beauty industry.
Worked directly with Government to scope vital aesthetics legislation included in the Health and Care Act 2022.
Launched The British Beauty Council interactive recycling map to allow consumers to find 2000+ beauty recycling points.
Launched an industry-first influencer skincare education programme 'Creator Collective' to tackle misinformation, in partnership with The No7 Beauty Company.
Attended COP26 in Glasgow as the only beauty NGO with observer status.To coincide, the Sustainable Beauty Coalition published the Planet Positive Beauty Guide, designed to combat misinformation and greenwashing.
The first in-person British Beauty Week launched under the theme "Beauty Reimagined," focused on the key industry pillars of wellness, inclusivity and sustainability, with attendance from the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak.
Successfully updated the National Occupational Standards (NOS) curriculum for hairdressing to include mandatory training for Afro and textured hair.
Launched a consumer confidence campaign 'Oh Hello Beauty' to encourage people to return to hair and beauty salons post-Covid.
Commissioned The Courage to Change report, the first report to uncover the sector’s impact on climate change, which called for greater cross industry collaboration to tackle plastic waste.
Co-developed Covid-19 guidelines with the Government to guide the beauty industry through the pandemic, going on to secure £500m in support for salons and supply chain brands.
The inaugural London Beauty Week launched in Covent Garden, co-founded by the British Beauty Council, featuring panels, a Beauty Playground and events from brands including Chanel, Dior, Tom Ford and Jo Malone London.
Commissioned the first 'Value of Beauty' Report, an economic impact report, conducted by Oxford Economics, providing the first-ever comprehensive economic measure of the UK beauty industry. It proved that the sector is a massive driver for the economy, jobs, and taxation
Commissioned the 'Defining of Beauty’ report with BritainThinks, the first ever cross-section of the industry that first identified the need for SIC codes update to define the hair, beauty and spa sectors.
The British Beauty Council was officially inaugurated, receiving government approval to use British and Council in the organisation’s name.
