Salon Smart Live 2020

by | Sep 29, 2020

Recorded in a London studio, Salon Smart Live 2020 was brought to life with an incredible business agenda centred on current covid-19 times but with a distinct direction in mind – how salons can reflect, reset and rebuild in order to move forward together.

The main stage presented a plethora of amazing presenters covering key issues which impact salon owners, managers and teams. Speakers included British Beauty Council Advisory Board Member Tom Chapman of The Lions Barber Collective, Bad Apple Hair’s Gavin Mills, Ken West, director of 3·6·5 Education, Christel Barron-Hough, founder of STIL and Katie Allan, owner of Mayfive, Team SliderCuts (who recently took part in our Reviving Beauty: Back in Business webinar), and salon owner and product pioneer, Phil Smith.

The 10-hour long programme also included two interactive workshops from Salon Smart partners, and British Beauty Council Patrons, L’Oréal Professionnel and Treatwell. Threads & Co managing director, Matt Bartell and Treatwell lead product manager, Laura Howard delivered a dose of ‘What A Client Wants’, including tips on identifying emerging trends and opportunities for growth. BBC1’s The One Show’s ‘green’ reporter, Lucy Siegle, spoke of sustainability, challenging daily practices and delivering a 10-point plan for salons to be kinder to the planet.

Phorest, ghd, and British Beauty Council Patrons L’Oréal Professionnel, Treatwell, and Timely, lead masterclasses, answering questions and sharing statistics, advice and creativity with a host of salon owners. Richard Phillipart and his LFW team recreated a trio of landmark Phillipart signature styles from his Nomadic Winter collection, first independent shoot for British Vogue and infamous lacquered beehive from the Jack Irving AW18 runway. After getting a sneak at how these session pros come together backstage, Richard settled down for a tête-à-tête with Creative HEAD Editor Amanda Nottage.

“Salon Smart Live was a big, bold experiment that really worked”, said Catherine Handcock, publisher of Creative HEAD and Salon Smart Live host. “Super-informative, with incredible insight, lively debate and genuinely thrilling hair work from Richard Phillipart and his team, we had hundreds of hairdressers tuning in and engaging with the content from start to finish. The technology came in for lots of praise too, with people commenting throughout the day on the quality of the output and how easy it was to use. And by making all the sessions available to view on demand for a further 12 months, we expect many hundreds more to access all this valuable knowledge and use it to steer their salon businesses through these challenging times – which is exactly what Salon Smart is about.”
