Lush launch plastic-free makeup at Oxford Street Flagship store

by | Nov 5, 2018

The British Beauty Council has read an insightful article in the Huffington Post last week, that the cosmetics retailer Lush is rolling out a range of plastic-free foundations and highlighters at it’s flagship store on Oxford Street. The range had previously been sold online but launched in store on the 1st November.

The line introduces 40 shades of foundation that are dipped in wax rather than wrapped in plastic, with five glow sticks that can be used as eyeshadows, lip colour and highlighters. Lush also holds a fuller range of “naked” plastic-free products, that include massage bars, bath bombs, soaps and much more.

Mark Constantine, Lush’s Co-founder said: “Packaging is rubbish and for too long we had had to suffer excessive amounts of it. Now that the true financial and environmental costs are becoming obvious, customers are challenging manufacturers and retailers to cut the wrap. Companies like ours need to think outside of the box and present customers with innovations that allow them to buy truly naked products.”

Over the past year their plastic-free shampoo bar sales have increased by 41%.

Charlotte Nisbet the naked project co-ordinator explains the maths behind buying naked: “If you use roughly 75ml of bubble bath per bath and the average liquid bubble bath is sold in approximately a 500ml bottle, then you’d get about seven baths out of each bottle of bubble bath. This means that Lush customers picking up products from the Christmas 2017 range kept approximately 1,248,503 bottles out of production.”
