It is fantastic to see Make-Up and Hairstyling being celebrated and recognised as an integral contributing component to the success of film. Last night (Sunday 9th February) at the Oscars 2020 the category saw a total of 5 nominations which is momentous in itself compared to the usual 3 nominations. (Vogue)
What is more, the winner of the category Bombshell was a bit of surprise compared to the usual historic winners which tended to include more “obvious” make-up looks/transformations. In fact the favourite to win was Joker but as we dig deeper into Bombshell’s make-up & hairstyling it is not hard to see why, with the incredible skill needed to transform well-known actors and actresses into real life people, they won this prestigious award.
In an interview with the New York Times, the team Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan and Vivian Baker share the process and application they went through to achieve the winning looks…
Kazu Hiro, who is known for his work on “Planet of the Apes” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and who won an Oscar for makeup for “The Darkest Hour,” said “Bombshell” was the hardest film he’s done to date. Makeup was key to the story. Vivian Baker, the head of the makeup department, said that in these women’s world, it symbolized power — both their own and Ailes’s. The team went through troves of images, documentaries and spent months watching clips of Fox, to study the women’s faces and on-air uniforms. In fact application for Theron took three hours, Kazu Hiro said.
