Date: Thursday 4th February

Time: 18:00

Place: Instagram Live (@britishbeautycouncil)

Do you think barbers play an important role in improving people’s self confidence and empowering men?

Who is Ben West?

At just 20 years old Ben has already won a Pride of Britain Award, The Diana Award and the Mental Health Hero Award as part of the The Sun Who Cares initiative. He has also spoken on numerous national and local news outlets contributing to the national conversation around mental health awareness.

The sudden and unexpected loss of his brother to suicide two years ago propelled Ben to take positive action from this tragedy and concentrate his pain into a drive to campaigning around mental health awareness, suicide prevention and fundamentally changing how we approach mental health, especially in schools and the education system.

His previous petition, calling for mandatory training in mental health first aid for all educators, garnered over 300,000 signatures and his most recent petition, to hold universities to account over mental health standards, is quickly gathering momentum.

Who is Tom Chapman?

Advisory Board Member Tom Chapman is an award winning hairdresser turned documentary maker, author, public speaker, international educator, brand developer, husband and father.

Tom started his career with Toni & Guy in 2002 as a hairdresser, and taught himself barbering because of his love for mens hair and alternative hair styles. He opened Tom Chapman Hair Design in Torquay, UK in 2011 and began educating 2 years later.

In September 2015 Tom founded The Lions Barber Collective, which started as a group of international barbers raising awareness for suicide prevention. It has since developed to become much more and now campaigns for the awareness of mental wellbeing and suicide prevention as well, believing that the barbershop is a great, safe place for men to talk, and through BarberTalk he hopes to train hair professionals across the globe to Recognise, Ask, Listen and Help those in their chairs.

What will the Wellbeing Workshop cover?

Ben and Tom will be having an open and honest discussion about the role hair and beauty professionals play in the health and wellbeing of their clients. The discussion will cover the importance of talking as well as the work of the Lions Barber Collective.
