Beauty brands suspend operations in Russia

by | Mar 9, 2022

Estée Lauder, L’Oréal and Unilever, amongst others, have announced that they’ve suspended commercial activity and advertising in Russia, as the conflict in Ukraine continues.

On the 8th March, Estée Lauder confirmed that it will close all of it’s stores, and suspend brand sites and shipments to it’s retailers in Russia. The Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation has already committed $1 million in support of relief efforts in Ukraine and the company will be donating ELC products to those displaced and in need. They also announced that their top priority remains the safety of all their employees, and so have decided to continue to provide compensation and support to all employees in Russia at this time.

Separately, L’Oréal announced that they have temporarily closed all of their stores, and directly-operated counters, as well as suspending all industrial and national media investments in Russia. Additionally, they have also closed their brand e-commerce sites in the country, and will be regularly assessing additional measures, whilst still taking care of our 2,200 Russian employees. L’Oréal have said that they are working with local and international NGOs in Ukraine, in addition to United Nations agencies, through donations of up to €5million. Already, they have already distributed over 250,000 essential care and hygiene products and will continue to provide additional products in the coming weeks.

Publishing a statement on their website, Unilever have announced that they have committed to donate €5m of essential products to the humanitarian relief effort in Ukraine.

“We have suspended all imports and exports of our products into and out of Russia, and we will stop all media and advertising spend. We will not invest any further capital into the country nor will we profit from our presence in Russia. We will continue to supply our everyday essential food and hygiene products made in Russia to people in the country. We will keep this under close review.”
